Under Yahweh’s Guidance and Providence

Years ago, Dave and I read a fable about a group of yearlings. When it came time for them to be broken to harness, most submitted. However, one particularly spirited colt kept evading being corralled. He was pretty proud of himself until the day the pasture got dry and there was no grain to be gleaned. Then he saw his cousins in the barn eating their providence. Their coats were shiny and they conducted themselves with dignity compared to the scruffy hungry fellow in the field. By accepting guidance, the ones in submission had everything they needed to be useful, mature creatures.

It’s a great illustration for the benefit of being poor in spirit—humble and not self-willed. We are to be rich in the Spirit from on High, and poor in the spirit of self-determination. We’re here on earth to learn. Some lessons by sad experience come dear, and others come through paying attention.

By earnestly seeking guidance ourselves, we are being fitted out to be on the giving end--all in good time.
