Down the Road

About fifty years ago, my Aunt Carolyn had a brainstorm: Grandma must have one more ride in a horse-drawn buggy. Some of us grandkids were visiting and that seemed like an opportune time to make it happen. Carolyn hadn’t thought much about how to get a frail woman into a wobbly carriage and even less, how to get her back out. But somehow that was accomplished.

The old swayback nag pulling the rig had seriously overloaded on fiber and the experience from behind was less than pleasant. We were all relieved for that to be over. Seeing a horse with carriage trot down the road from a different vantage point was much more thrilling.

There’s a time for most things under the sun. Sometimes we find ourselves right in the thick of things. And then there might be seasons or circumstances when we feel like we’ve been sidelined. But observation from a bit of a distance can yield good results. We can learn vicariously as well as from our own experiences, and that’s a good multiplier.

Watch and learn! And don’t let just anybody take you for a ride.
