As in the Days of NOAA…

We have an obnoxious weather radio. NOAA is its name. It makes this hoarse, jarring, blasting sound and then the message which follows is hard to understand unless you get up from your chair and race to the back room to listen carefully. There have actually been times when we turned it off because it kept waking us up when we were trying to sleep.
The other day, though, the interruption was particularly inopportune and Dave complained. Since then, it has been silent. In spite of the fact that severe storms have come through, it sits primly refusing to offer any advice.
The moral to this story hardly needs to be said. The intent of warnings is to get us up out of our take-it-easy chair, not to play sweet music to comfort and soothe us. We must not slumber when danger lurks or be lulled by the illusion of normalcy. And we’ll need to make some effort to be in position to receive further instruction.
